Over the centuries the City of Redondo was originally inhabited by Native Americans, has been a booming trade center for oil and lumber and was originally fashioned as a popular resort town. In 1889 this coastal tract was sold to the Redondo Beach Improvement Company, founded by Robert Thompson and John Ainsworth.
In 1890, the Hotel Redondo opened. The new hotel offered an 18-hole golf course, beautiful landscaping, tennis courts and 225 up-scale rooms. For those who couldn’t afford the price of hotel accommodations there was a tent available at nearby Tent City. Tourists were charged $3.00 per week to rent a tent, which were made of wooden floors and electric lights. The new city was now a popular destination for tourists.
Railroads and steamships brought people by the thousands. They also brought in massive loads of lumber and other important materials. Prior to the development of San Pedro harbor as a port, Redondo was the first port of Los Angeles County.
On April 18, 1892, the city voted for incorporation. The first City Hall was built in 1908 at Benita and Emerald Street. When San Pedro Harbor started to take shape in 1899 Redondo was already declining.
In 1912 the Pacific Steamship Company discontinued Redondo as a scheduled port of call. The railroad pulled out in 1926 and then when prohibition was enacted the once magnificent Hotel Redondo closed its doors and in 1925 was sold for scrap lumber for a reported $300.
By the mid 1930’s illegal gambling, complete with mobsters and street crime incidents, found their way to Redondo.
In 1956, work began on a brand new marina; dubbed King Harbor after the man who was a moving force behind its creation, Representative Cecil R. King. The renaissance was in force and Newton Plumbing was working in Redondo offering the highest quality work for reasonable prices.
Redondo’s population boomed in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Still perceived of as a tourist and resort town, Redondo offers fishing piers, amusements and a saltwater lagoon. There are many fine restaurants, hotels and a beautiful harbor.
Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center is an important part of the South Bay arts scene. Redondo residents may take special pride in their high educational standing in the state and their success in keeping small business thriving. Redondo is still a really nice place to live and or visit.
