Newton Knows Our Neighborhood - Holmby Hills, CA 90024
In the shade and constant protection of the giant Sycamore trees lies a little known jewel in the crown of the elegant and grace of the enchanting Westside. You can almost hear Bing Crosby humming a soothing tune as you stroll in the tiny Holmby Park interlaced by a charming little pitch and putt golf course and a petite brook. Where Bing’s humble abode stood now stands, possibly, the most-expensively priced home in California to-date; presently on the market for $150,000,000 dollars.
The history of Holmby Hills goes back to Don Maximo Alanis, a Spanish soldier who first obtained title to the neighborhood's 4,438 acres under a Mexican land grant in 1843. By 1884, about 2,000 acres of this land came into the possession of a forty-niner named John Wolfskill who paid $10 an acre for it and built a ranch house near the present-day Mormon Temple in Westwood.
By the1920's the land had passed into the hands of Arthur Letts and his son-in-law William Janss who also developed much of adjoining Westwood and the brand new UCLA campus. Founder of Broadway Department Stores and Bullock's, Letts Sr. was responsible for developing a great deal of Hollywood. He also purchased and developed Westwood and the UCLA campus. This was done through the Janss Development Co. and Harold Janss was Mr. Letts son in law.
Harold and his brother Edwin developed quite a bit of Los Angeles from the turn of the century into the 1960's. Letts Sr.’s son, Arthur Letts, Jr., built what is now known as the Playboy Mansion.
When the area was renamed Holmby Hills, it was envisioned as an exclusive neighborhood that would feature Tudor-style homes similar to Arthur Lett's own residence that now belongs to one Hugh Hefner.
The relatively low profile of the area attracts some of the world's wealthiest and most famous personalities. Holmby Hills is a place of mansions abound and these are the homes of captains of industry, publishers and the wealthiest of the wealthy. Peace and quite surrounds the residents and the ambience delights passers-by.
